“Replacing windows in your property can be a major commitment in terms of cost and potential upheaval. It is something that should only need to be done once and so its important to chose an installer who can not only provide a quality product that enhances your property but also who can complete the installation quickly with the minimum of fuss and upheaval.
The Internet and press are awash with a plethora of ‘replacement window’ companies, ranging from national long established branded names to relatively new small independent one-man bands. Choosing the right company can be somewhat of a nightmare and it is wise to seek the experiences and recommendations from family and friends.
My project was a conversion of offices into two mews cottages. This required 16 windows to be replaced, as the existing ones were a mishmash of yellowing UPVC, rusting metal and rotting wood. It was important to achieve a common appearance that would not only suit the conservation area but also enhance the traditional Cotswold Stone building.
Initially, thinking that UPVC would be the cheapest option, I obtained 3 quotes from local suppliers, and this is where the confusion started. There was a staggering difference of £2K between the lowest and highest quote. It was also difficult to compare quotes as the cheapest did not price for composite doors and the most expensive only quoted for 2 doors, I needed 3. It was also frustrating trying to obtain schematic drawings of the windows and doors which is important in order to see which casements open and from which side, also to see the number of panes provided for each casement. All 3 companies seemed reluctant to provide schematics and only the middle priced quote ended up providing suitable drawings.
Being totally confused with the prices and what I could expect to be delivered I talked to a friend who had recently used Countryside Windows. She had chosen Countryside following recommendations from friends in her village and could not speak highly enough of them, not only for their prices but also for the service they provide.
I thus decided to call Countryside Windows and arranged to visit them at their unit in Andoversford. When I arrived I was greeted by really friendly helpful staff, which immediately gave me a confident and warm feeling about the company. I was taken to their showroom where all the different options were carefully explained to me. I was completely drawn to their aluminium Heritage window range in Tetbury Green. I had always preferred an aluminium solution in preference to UPVC mainly for its construction, finish and environmental advantages, but had discounted it as I thought cost wise it would be way above my budget. Countrywide suggested that they visit my property, complete a survey and come up with some quotes.
Two staff from the company arrived at the arranged time to survey my property. They explained various issues, such as the current position of the guttering bracket making window opening difficult and then suggested solutions. Another issue was that a couple of windows spanned 2 rooms and again the surveyors explained how this could be solved.
A few days later the quote arrived. The specification was for aluminium Heritage windows in Tetbury Green outside and white inside with rather lovely in keeping satin nickel handles, 2 composite front doors and a composite stable door. I have to say I was surprised that the quoted price for my preferred choice of windows was comparable with the most expensive UPVC quote I had been given and this for a far superior product and specification. Countryside also provided detailed schematics of each window and door, showing construction details, number of panes per casement together with which casement opened and from which side.
Countryside then worked closely with me to finalise the drawings, in particular changing from 6 panes per casement to 4. This change gave a far better balance to the windows and indeed reduced the overall cost of the job.
The installation team from Countryside turned up on site at the arranged date and took about a week to complete the installation. The team were really friendly, helpful and professional and left the site clean and tidy, taking away all the old windows, doors etc.
I cannot recommend Countryside Windows enough, they are FENSA accredited, which is a must for any replacement window company. The windows come with a ten-year company guarantee that can be insurance backed for protection in the unlikely event of the company ceasing trading. Their aluminium Heritage range has a much narrower profile than wooden or UPVC windows and looks perfect and in keeping for old stone buildings. The narrow profile has the added advantage of allowing more light into the room making it an ideal solution for an old cottage. The staff at Countryside are so helpful and friendly and you couldn’t find a more professional ‘no fuss’ installation team. The after sales service provided by Countryside is faultless, a faulty window latch found several weeks after installation was replaced immediately, without question. If you need replacement windows with no confusion or drama then Countryside is definitely the company to use.”
